Research

At the Energy Innovation Center (EIZ) of BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg, over 100 researchers from 16 disciplines are working on developing future-proof technologies for a climate-neutral energy supply. In six thematically interconnected laboratories, complex issues related to the energy transition are addressed – from modeling and optimizing cross-sectoral energy systems to developing real prototypes. Research priorities include CO₂-neutral electricity and heat generation based on green hydrogen, the integration of large-scale energy storage systems, cyber-secure control systems, smart grids, energy economic modeling, and high-performance computing methods. Using state-of-the-art laboratory equipment such as high-voltage chambers, hardware-in-the-loop systems, and molecular analysis, innovative concepts are experimentally validated, and scalable solutions for a secure, resilient, and sustainable energy future are developed.

A divider consisting of circles in the six Lab colors

The Scientific Computing (SC) Lab brings together various competencies in the field of scientific computing that play a role in the mathematical modeling, simulation, and optimization of multi-energy systems.

The aim of the Energy and Conversion Lab is to map the four levels for sector-coupled energy systems – heat, electricity, storage and mobility – in a CO2-neutral circular approach based on green hydrogen.

At the EECON Lab, we support the transformation of the energy system with the help of energy economic analyses in three research areas.

For the energy transition to be successful, battery storage is needed to bridge energy differences between generation and consumption on an hourly basis and to provide control power.

On the one hand, the Electric Power Systems Lab addresses grid operational issues related to decentralization and restructuring in the generation sector.

The COSYS Laboratory is an interdisciplinary research center specializing in the development of future energy systems. Its focus is on research into CO2-neutral and cyber-secure integrated energy systems.
