Electric Power Systems Lab
The EPS Lab investigates key issues in power grid operation in the context of the energy transition. Using a grid training simulator, operation, system management, and grid restoration in transmission and distribution networks are realistically investigated. For the low-voltage level, an existing microgrid is being expanded into a smart grid real-world laboratory to test cross-sector operating strategies for electricity, heating, cooling, and mobility. Another focus is on the insulation technology of high-voltage switchgear. Due to changing loads caused by power electronics feed-in, environmentally friendly substitutes for SF₆ and mineral oils are being researched. Components are tested under realistic climatic and pollution conditions in the high-voltage hall and climate chamber. The goal is the development of sustainable, robust grid resources for future energy systems.
