High Power Grid Converter Lab
The HPGC Lab develops power electronics system solutions for the integration of large-scale energy storage systems into the power grid of the future. The goal is The aim is to bidirectionally convert high power outputs – up to 600 MW – between the high voltages of the transmission grid (110–380 kV) and the low DC voltages of battery or hydrogen systems. This will create storage power plants that can not only compensate for short-term fluctuations but also bridge long-term supply bottlenecks ("brownouts") of up to 14 days. The focus is on the development of modular multilevel power converters (MMCs), highly efficient converter architectures, and an economically and technically optimized combination of short- and long-term storage systems. All concepts are being validated using laboratory models, such as a 200 kW/690 V prototype. In addition, a higher-level control system for the coordinated regulation of energy flows in such storage power plants is being designed and tested.
