EIZ laboratories
The Scientific Computing (SC) Lab brings together various competencies in the field of scientific computing that play a role in the mathematical modeling, simulation, and optimization of multi-energy systems.
The aim of the Energy and Conversion Lab is to map the four levels for sector-coupled energy systems – heat, electricity, storage and mobility – in a CO2-neutral circular approach based on green hydrogen.
At the EECON Lab, we support the transformation of the energy system with the help of energy economic analyses in three research areas.
For the energy transition to be successful, battery storage is needed to bridge energy differences between generation and consumption on an hourly basis and to provide control power.
On the one hand, the Electric Power Systems Lab addresses grid operational issues related to decentralization and restructuring in the generation sector.
The COSYS Laboratory is an interdisciplinary research center specializing in the development of future energy systems. Its focus is on research into CO2-neutral and cyber-secure integrated energy systems.

SPARK Inspire is a series of events designed to inspire and encourage energy researchers, students, and aspiring entrepreneurs to pursue entrepreneurial ventures and adopt a startup-oriented mindset. These events offer insights from energy startup founders who have successfully navigated the path from academia to market, as well as from investors who recognize the value of science-based startups.
SPARK Academy
The goal of the SPARK Academy is to provide energy researchers and students with comprehensive business management knowledge and skills essential for founding a startup. The academy takes place annually and offers a limited number of places for highly motivated researchers and students. The program consists of five half-day workshops covering key topics such as business model development, market and competitive analysis, finance, financing options, legal corporate structures, intellectual property protection, and pitching and presentation skills. Professional trainees lead all sessions, bringing their respective specializations and perspectives on practical applications from the energy sector.
SPARK Mentoring
The SPARK team offers a personalized mentoring program for energy researchers and students interested in starting a business. This mentoring program focuses on validating business ideas, developing business models, identifying funding opportunities, and writing grant proposals. Experienced mentors work closely with the founders to address their specific challenges and support them throughout the entire process, from idea generation to company launch.
